At what age should I explain to my son about his heart problems?

Heart Problems
jandismommie asked:

When my son was born he had to have surgery on his heart because he was born with several defects in his heart. He is starting to ask me lots of questions about his scar and what the doctors did and why he was born this way and his brother wasn’t, etc. I just don’t know how much detail I should tell and how to answer some of these questions. At what age should I explain in detail about what he went through and what is the best way to answer these questions so he can understand them? Thank You!

How common is it to develop heart problems after lung surgery?

Heart Problems
ngmema asked:

My lung cancer surgery (which was successful) was just over a year ago (I just posted about scar tissue pain) and have developed two types of abnormal heart beats recently and continue with shortness of breath which is getting worse. Just trying to come up with explanations so I can stop “bugging” my doctors. Lung doctor suggest cardiac problems but it does not appear that way. I am waiting on results of a stress test and echo.

I had surgery to correct what the doctors called endocardial cushion defect, would this be considered a form of heart disease, or just a defect?

Does a weak heart at birth mean heart problems later in life?

Heart Problems
Dan H asked:

I was born with a sizeable hole in my heart. The doctors said that if the heart didn’t heal to at least a murmur by age 1, open heart surgery would be needed. Luckily, the heart healed to a murmur, by that time.

I am 33 years old and, by listening to the heart, a murmur is no longer detected. My concern, though, is - if I was born with a heart defect, could this cause problems later in life?
